Care and Treatment at Martha's Vineyard Hospital
Infusion therapy involves the administration of medication through a needle or catheter. Typically, “infusion therapy” means that a drug is administered intravenously, but the term also may refer to situations where drugs are provided through other non-oral routes, such as intramuscular injections. Staffed by certified registered nurses and designed to support patients who would otherwise have to travel off-Island for care, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital infusion therapists provide personalized care on an outpatient basis for a variety of medical conditions.
- Blood Transfusion
- Phlebotomy
- IV Antibiotics
- Injections
- Limited Chemotherapy
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Infusion Services in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center provides quality and compassionate care for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, biotherapy, and immunotherapy. MGH board-certified oncologists and hematologists travel to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to see patients, consult, diagnose, and identify treatment plans. Treatment is supervised by the MVH full-time on-site oncology nurse practitioner and administered by oncology certified nurses.
The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Infusion Services and Oncology team also care for seasonal patients actively receiving treatment and will work closely with your off-island care team to ensure continuity of care while on island.
In addition, MVH provides treatments for patients referred by a specialist with acute and chronic illness including but not limited to infectious disease, gastrointestinal, rheumatological, and neurological disorders.
While our goal is to provide local care and prevent patients from traveling off-island unnecessarily, we may determine the need for consultation or testing off-island to provide you with the most comprehensive care possible. At this time, radiation services are not available at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Please note that a Physician Referral is required for infusion therapy at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
