Dr. Alamjit Virk M.D. has been named as the new Medical Director of Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Services at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He has been working as a staff physician for the organization for about a year and a half.
A board-certified emergency medicine physician, Virk was most recently an Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts.
“We are enormously pleased to welcome someone of Dr. Virk’s caliber to the MVH leadership team,” said CEO Joe Woodin. “His experience, expertise, and commitment to the practice of emergency medicine is a perfect fit for the emergency situations we deal with here on the island, both in the summer and year-round.”
“Emergency physicians make immediate decisions regarding treatment, both in the pre-hospital setting and in the ER to prevent death, disability, or further injury,” Woodin said. “With nearly twenty-five years’ experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Virk has been an outstanding addition to our organization.”
“I’m very excited to be joining the medical staff at MVH,” Virk said. “With the leadership provided by Dr. Jeff Zack prior to my assuming this role, I feel fortunate to be inheriting a well run Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Program. Given the challenges in managing this vital service in healthcare on the Island, I look forward to the opportunity to provide a seamless transition in leadership in these programs and improving on the good work he’s done.”
Prior to becoming an Attending Physician at Emerson Hospital, Dr. Virk was Assistant Director of Emergency Medicine at Faulkner Hospital in Boston, and Waltham Hospital in Waltham, Mass. He earned his Masters in Public Health in 1993 at Harvard School of Public Health after completing his Residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
