Food as Medicine: Getting the most out of Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats (or “healthy fats”) that you get from food or supplements because your body does not make them.

This type of fat can have a dramatic effect on your cardiovascular system, keeping your heart, lungs, blood vessels and immune system working properly.

There are three main types of Omega-3s:

  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

EPA and DHA are found in fish, such as herring, salmon, mackerel, sardines, halibut, canned Albacore tuna, clams, and lobster.

ALA is found in plant foods, such as flaxseed oil, chia seeds, canola oil, tofu, and more.
