Dr. Nicole Absar to provide new Alzheimer’s, dementia services

Martha’s Vineyard Hospital is pleased to announce an exciting new program at the hospital, as well as a new provider.

Nicole Absar, MD, has joined Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, providing neurocognitive and Alzheimer’s disease services to the Vineyard community and the neighboring regions including Nantucket and Cape Cod.

Dr. Absar will be evaluating patients at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital both in person and via telemedicine. She is available to provide diagnostic evaluation and management services for neurocognitive disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease dementia, Lewy body dementia, related dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia and other neurocognitive disorders.

Dr. Absar received her medical degree from Dhaka Medical College in Bangladesh and completed her residency at Tufts University Medical School where she served as Chief Resident. She then went on to complete her certification in Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS).

With more than 20 years of experience, she is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (ABPN), is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) and is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA).

Dr. Absar is a health activist and has been involved in the annual Neurology on the Hill (NOH) event sponsored by the AAN for national networking and to address neurological issues with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to bring changes in legislation and patient advocacy.

She is a registered yoga teacher and specializes in yoga as therapy for brain disorders and uses yoga therapy as part of an integrated neuropsychiatric treatment plan.

Martha’s Vineyard Hospital offers several neurology services, including a Neurology Clinic, routine and urgent TeleNeurology consults, a new service launched in October 2023, and stroke telehealth services.

The Neurology Clinic saw 629 visits in 2023 and the consult service is allowing patients to get the care they need on the island versus having to go off-island.
